Willian: Newcastle result has given Chelsea confidence to beat PSG

According to Squawka News, Chelsea attacker Willian declared that the Blues’ emphatic 5-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday has given them a significant boost ahead of their Champions League tie with Paris Saint-Germain.

Guus Hiddink’s men destroyed the Magpies at Stamford Bridge in a scintillating first-half display, racing into a 3-0 lead inside 17 minutes through Diego Costa, Pedro and Willian, with Pedro adding his second after half-time before Bertrand Traore completed the rout.

Chelsea remain unbeaten since Dutchman Hiddink returned to the club as interim manager in December following the departure of Jose Mourinho. 

On Tuesday the Blues will face one of their toughest tasks of the campaign when they travel to the Parc des Princes to face a dominant PSG team who are currently 24 points clear at the top of Ligue 1.

However, Willian feels that Saturday’s result is the perfect way to prepare for Laurent Blanc’s side.

Willian was on Chelsea TV quoted saying:

“We killed them [Newcastle] in 20 minutes and then it was more and more easy to play,” the Brazilian told Chelsea TV. “Now we have more confidence to go there and to play. Paris have a great team, great players, but we go there to try to win the game.”

Although PSG remain unbeaten in their respective league they could only manage a 0-0 draw with Lille at the weekend and have suffered a defeat in the Champions League, when they lost 1-0 to Real Madrid in November.


Stopping Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be key to Chelsea’s success in the fixture as the enigmatic Swedish striker has scored 27 goals in all competitions this season and will be keen to avenge the harsh red card he received against Chelsea during last season’s encounter in the same tournament.

Paris Saint-Germain have only conceded 12 goals in Ligue 1 this season.
