Kaizer Chiefs defensive midfielder, Willard Katsande, discusses his upbringing and how that has shaped up the way he plays.
Nicknamed 'Salt & Vinegar', katsande has a reputation as the hard man and enforcer in the Amakhosi’s midfield. His no nonsense approach and tough tackling made him a crucial member of the Chiefs team that conceded the least amount of goals of any team in the PSL last season.
The 29-year-old spoke to Soccer Laduma about his humble upbringing and how growing up in tough conditions made him the player he is today.
Talking to soccer laduma Willard katsande was quoted saying:
“I think that’s (growing up in Zimbabwe) what really made me strong. You know, we used to walk long distances barefoot to fetch firewood.
“We became very strong, so much so that we started playing barefoot football and became very good. The long walks to fetch firewood made me stronger and brave, and that also helped me in my game because now I am not afraid.”
“It taught me that in life you have to face a situation head-on. I grew up in a poor family and I had to work hard to fend for everyone. That also helped me become a stronger man.”
